Disney’s Big Hero 6 triumphs over Nolan’s Interstellar

This shouldn’t be surprising to many of you. Disney’s Big Hero 6 is the number one movie over the weekend, beating out Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.

Big Hero 6 made an estimated $56.2 million over the weekend. How did it do compared to previous Walt Disney Animation Studios films? It was up 15 percent compared to Wreck-It Ralph, which opened to $49 million back in 2012. Big Hero 6 also has the second-highest animated opening of the year, falling behind How To Train Your Dragon 2 (the dragon sequel opened to $49.5 million).

Interstellar opened to an estimated $50 million. If we include the two-day limited release, the total amounts to $52.15 million. Nolan’s previous non-Batman movie, Inception, opened to $62.8 million. The last big space movie was Gravity, which opened to $55.8 million.
