Nickelodeon’s TMNT interview with Seth Green, Rob Paulsen and Greg Cipes
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle craze is far from over. In fact it’s getting better than over, thanks to the recent TMNT film and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! We went to the Nickelodeon Studio to chat with the stars from the animated series on why it’s so hot to be green. We also chat with Seth Green, the new voice for Leonardo.
Nerd Reactor: Could you see yourself doing this for another 10 years?
Seth Green: We expect to be the generation that kills this franchise. I mean there’s no way to predict it, but certainly the Turtles are a really indelible property. It connects with audiences, young and old, the same way it always has been. Sort of what you were talking about.
Rob Paulsen: We were talking about this earlier. And you, Greg, were talking about how much you were a Turtle guy. The cool thing is, this is my second ride in the Turtle Van. Man, when I go to these events, the median age might be 30-35 years old, and they are right at the prime Turtle age when I was doing the original show, and they got kids. It’s such an unusual circumstance to have a show that’s this powerful. It’s also a property that’s generating significant income. The timing is impeccable, and [the franchise is] powerful 2o years later. You have Mom and Dad lined up to have Raphael’s autograph from the original show, and they’re in their original TMNT t-shirt and their kids are dressed up in their new TMNT stuff. They go home and watch the new show and watch the DVDs of the original show and they both love it. That’s really unusual. So to answer your question, it’s really up to Viacom.
Greg Cipes: I’m going to be doing this at least another 2o years because it’s Mikey ’til I die!
NR: What’s next for the Turtles? Are you guys taking back the city?
Seth: I mean the Kraang, man.
Greg: The Kraang, we can’t get rid of him.
Seth: Gotta watch out for that Kraang. We can’t really tell you anything. I mean you know in Star Wars there’s going to be a Millennium Falcon; you just don’t know how. So yes the Turtles are attempting to reclaim and rebuild the city. The season finale left with the Kraang overtaking the planet and theoretically killing Splinter. So it’s a tough season at the start.
Rob: I love that the overarching theme is the bond between the Turtles, and their goal is to bring their brother back to health. It’s always some comedy infused with some scary-ass bad guys, and then of course we are going to try to save Master Splinter. It’s just that old standby, you don’t leave your brother behind, and I think it’s entertaining. It’s a great message. It’s spread out over a generation of fans, and it’s pretty much universal good guy stuff.
Seth: But the Kraang, man!
NR: Greg, are you a super method actor?
Greg: Yes, I just wear ninja turtle underwear in the booth when we are recording.
Seth: Again that’s true.
Greg: It’s the same ones I’ve had since I was 8 years old.
NR: That’s commitment. So what about the fans that are dying to see Turtles with a love interest.
Seth: There’s a whole generation of women who unapologetically will tell you who they are physically and romantically attracted to amongst the turtles. My wife, when we met and were just friends, she told me her top 3 favorite boy characters. You ready for this? Number one: Voltron. Not Lance…Voltron, the formed robot. She looks at Voltron and was like, “Oh yeah.” Number two: Leonardo from the Turtles. So when this opportunity came through I was like, “Uh uh yeah.”
Rob: Where do I sign?
Seth: When we watched the first episode of the new season, she was cuddling with me on the couch.
NR: Wait what’s the third?
Seth: Oh the third one’s Gambit. I mean we meet like grown men dressed up like Gambit. And she’s like let’s take a picture. I’m like, “Hey, hey, hey.” But when it’s a guy in giant rubber turtle suit you don’t care.
[End of Interview]
The Turtles are back. They may sound a bit different, but the message is still the same. Brotherhood, fighting for what’s right, and of course Pizza!!! You can tune in to TMNT and see the season premiere on Nickelodeon this Friday, October 3rd at 8pm!
