X-Men: Apocalypse likely to not include Storm, Jean and Cyclops

Spoilers if you haven’t seen X-Men: Days of Future Past yet.

In X-Men: Days of Future Past, Wolverine was sent to the past to prevent the destruction of humanity from sentinels (giant robots ordered to apprehend mutants). He was successful in stopping it, and this created a new alternate timeline where Cyclops (James Marsden) and Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) are still alive (thus reversing the damages done by Brett Ratner with X3). Fans were hoping to see the cast return in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse film, but that may not be the case.

In a Yahoo Q&A session, writer Simon Kinsberg, who wrote X-Men: Days of Future Past and the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, has said that we’re not likely going to see the original X-Men cast, since the film will be taking place 20 years before the first X-Men film.

“If we included some of the original X-Men like Storm and Jean and Scott and other in Apocalypse, yeah we’d have to recast them, as Apocalypse takes place a good twenty years before [the first] X-Men, which was now, insanely, a good ten to fifteen years ago.”

“It would be really hard to do. Halle (Berry) and Famke (Janssen) and Jimmy (Marsden) and others have done such wonderful jobs of bringing those parts to life, and are so identified with those parts now. So it would be a tall task. But I also would have said before First Class that there would be no actors who can stand alongside Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart.”

The comment contradicts his previous interview where he said that Apocalypse¬†“will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too.”

Perhaps he had a change of heart during the writing process?

In any case, what’s the point of changing the timeline and having Cyclops and Jean Grey come back in Days of Future Past if Fox isn’t going to capitalize on that? What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27, 2016, with director Bryan Singer expected to direct.
