Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition) review

Disney Infinity was one of the few games that allowed gamers to teleport their toys into the virtual gaming world. We’ve seen this with Activision’s Skylanders, but Disney had an edge, and that was allowing gamers to collect and play with their favorite Disney/Pixar characters from Frozen, Monsters Inc, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, Cars, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph and many more. Now we have the next evolution with Disney Infinity 2.0, which hits store shelves today. Everything you know about Disney Infinity has been improved in big ways including new characters, content, worlds and improved gameplay mechanics. I’m warning you; this will become an expensive hobby.

Disney Infinity 2.0 launches with Marvel play sets and characters, and to get started, you must get the Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes Starter Pack. It includes the Disney Infinity 2.0 game disc, power packs, Infinity base and figures for Iron Man, Thor and Black Widow. Like the previous game, the sequel features two different game modes: Play Sets and Toy Box. In the Play Set mode, only compatible characters can be in that mode. For example, the Avengers Play Set will allow characters like Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America and Thor to join the fight. For the Guardians of the Galaxy play set, you can play as Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket, Gamora and Drax (as long as you have the toys, you can play as them). There is an exception though, for example, if you collect enough Iron Man coins in the Guardians of the Galaxy play set, you can play as him in that game world.

When starting the game, you’ll be introduced to different Disney characters roaming around their respective worlds, which all leads to the Disney toys coming together. You can then do the Toy Box tutorial, and this is where your imagination comes to life. It’s a lot more robust than the first game, and you can add buildings, friends, foes, and other objects to create whatever world you want. You can mix and match Disney and Marvel NPC characters, and all Disney 1.0 figures are compatible in Toy Box 2.0. The Toy Box have been improved to take advantage of the Marvel characters powers. For example, Spider-Man will be able to climb buildings here, and characters like Iron Man and Nova can fly around and land on top of tall buildings.

If you want to play missions with story, you can with the play set. For the Avengers play set, your playground is New York City’s Manhattan complete with the Avengers Tower. As Hulk, you’ll be able to jump high and climb on buildings. Captain America will be able to dispense justice with his melee attacks and throw his shield (the sound of the shield is pretty cool). Iron Man is pretty powerful, since he’ll be able to shoot and fly. Don’t worry, characters with no flying powers can also traverse around New York City with ease thanks to vehicles. It’s like Grand Theft Auto for kids, since you’ll be able to drive around and wreck cars, street lamps, and other objects.

The fun doesn’t stop there. You can get the Guardians of the Galaxy package that includes the Guardians of the Galaxy play set, Star-Lord and Gamora. Other figures to add to the fun include Groot, Rocket and Drax. Sure, they can’t fly around like Iron Man or climb buildings like Hulk, but they are still fun to play. Groot has some gnarly tree powers, Gamora and Drax are skilled in melee combat, and Star-Lord and Rocket are fun with guns. (It’s always cute to see Rocket dual wield giant guns, but don’t him hear you say that.)

Then the last launch package is the Spider-Man one that includes the Spider-Man play set, Spider-Man and Nova. This is the weirder of the bunch, since most of the characters compatible with this play set feels tacked on into the storyline. My favorite character to use here is Venom. He’s able to climb buildings really fast (Spider-Man crawling around isn’t fast enough). Venom doesn’t start off with unlimited web slinging, but once you earn XP points, you can unlock different skills and powers including web slinging. You’ll be happy to know that Samuel L. Jackson voices Nick Fury in the game.

With the Marvel characters, you’ll be able to unlock many powers including faster speed, deadly combos, and crazy finishers. The Guardians of the Galaxy play set story missions are fun and feel varied. Some of the story missions for the Spider-Man play set can feel repetitive and dull (since some of it takes place in the sewer), but the setting for New York City makes up for it.

The introduction to Disney Infinity 2.0 is a big tease. You get a sequence where you get to play as Aladdin in Agrabah, Tinker Bell flying in London, Merida and Stitch, with Maleficent and Hiro and Baymax from Big Hero 6 making an appearance. (Expect these characters in November.) It’s sad that these characters won’t have a play set, because having a taste of Agrabah and London in the intro sequence was magical.

The Toy Box mode is more structured this time around, and you’ll be given some objectives to create your world. You can add enemies, create a tower defense game, and other mini games. Then there’s the INterior mode, where you can build from the inside. You’ll be able to decorate it with themed walls, furniture, and other items. A lot of them can be unlocked by playing the game, including unlocking items via the play set.

Want people to see your creation? No problem. The online community is there, and you’ll be able to upload your world for others to enjoy. Disney also has their own worlds that you can download. The possibilities are endless.

As fun as the game is, there are some minor issues I had. The play set story missions use the same icon as the side missions. It’s confusing if you want to focus on certain objectives. The loading between different worlds can take a while, although swapping characters is pretty seamless for the most part (I played the PS4 version). This is probably due to the bigger worlds.

The game as a whole can feel intimidating at first, but once you get a feel for it, there’s a lot of content around, giving you hours and hours of fun. Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition: Marvel Super Heroes is easily recommended for Marvel fans. Not only can you collect Disney-fied figures of Marvel characters, but you have a big playground for them to play in. It’s a game that includes a lot of modes and content, and you’ll be playing for hours as you explore and upgrade your characters and their worlds.
