Ben Kingsley teases Trevor being created by the Mandarin

If you haven’t watched Iron Man 3 by now, be prepared to be spoiled (if you haven’t been spoiled by the header already). In Iron Man 3, it was revealed that The Mandarin (Sir Ben Kingsley) was really just a washed-up actor named Trevor Slattery working for the real villain, Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce). This created a split with the audience, with some hardcore fans mad at the portrayal of The Mandarin.

In the Marvel One Shot, “All Hail the King“, it was revealed that the real Mandarin wasn’t too pleased with Slattery portraying him, which resulted in the real deal sending a member from the Ten Rings to apprehend the actor turned inmate.

In an interview with IGN, Kingsley says that Slattery could be a creation of The Mandarin:

“Has the Mandarin invented Trevor, or has Trevor invented the Mandarin? Which is which? The Mandarin could be so supremely intelligent that he could have said, ‘You know what? I’ll invent this actor, and he will be my mask.’ You know, which is which? Who’s pulling the strings. Now, this is me just free-thinking here, but I would love to revisit that world. But Trev, bless him, may have made an indelible mark on that world. So everyone might say, ‘Is it Trev under there?’ So they’d have to approach it quite carefully, and so would I, but I would love to go back to that world, yeah.”

Can Slattery be the real Mandarin? Judging from the Marvel One Shot, I highly doubt it. Kevin Feige is winning a lot of points for putting everything together, but he was also responsible for Trevor being the decoy.

So now we’re still left with whether we’ll ever see Iron Man go toe to toe with the real Mandarin…that is if Robert Downey Jr. wants to do another one and signs for more Marvel deals.
