SDCC 2014: Nerd HQ’s Let’s Be Cops – Conversation for a Cause

The Nerd Machine’s hugely successful NERD HQ kicked off with some great Conversation for a Cause panels including one with some of the cast from the upcoming film, Lets Be Cops. Damon Wayans Jr., Rob Riggle, and Keegan-Michael Key joined in to discuss the upcoming comedy. Normally Nerd HQ streams the videos live and uploads it after to the YouTube page, but it hasn’t been updated yet!

During this nearly hour-long interview we got to learn a lot about the movie and even more about the actors in it. An interesting fact was that it was filmed nearly 2 years ago before Damon Wayans Jr. and New Girl co-star Jake Johnson really got to know each other. They had filmed the pilot for New Girl together when the fate of the hilarious comedy Happy Endings was in limbo, before getting renewed for a season. He was then replaced on the show and ended up coming back 2 years later after Happy Endings finished. This was very surprising as the commercials show them to have great chemistry, which I attributed to their time together in New Girl.

Damon Wayans Jr. made some great jokes about the film discussing how he did a ride along before it filmed to learn more about being a cop. He said it was great to be a black man in the front seat of a cop car, leaving the audience out of breath from laughing so hard. He also went on to tell a story about the famous comedy brother duo Shawn and Marlon Wayans and how as a child they used to push him off the toilet and laugh at his poop for no reason. This was pretty funny considering how many people in their family are famous, in fact I don’t even know if I can count them all.

Rob Riggle, who always seems to have a hilarious support role in the many films he has done, made some great jokes, showed us some clips, and bantered back and forth with his co-stars reminiscing about the only restaurant they would eat at. When asked if being a marine has helped his career as a comedy actor, he said very straight faced, “No,” and then said it actually was easier when it came to weapons training.

Keegan-Michael Key, who I am probably the least familiar with having only watched a few episodes Key and Peele, didn’t let anyone down and received the most questions out of anyone on stage. People asked about his future shows and if they would have the same characters which, don’t worry, they will. He also was asked if his co-stars from Lets Be Cops would ever be on his show which led to an awkward smiling moment between the cast and an agreement to do so!

Zachary Levi was spot on while hosting this and acted as the moderator, taking questions from the audience and making jokes in between. Overall the chemistry between the actors and their interaction with the audience made me even more excited to watch this film, and I think you should all go and support them while laughing your butt off.
