Penguins of Madagascar directors Simon J. Smith and Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath, John Malkovich and Benedict Cumberbatch made an appearance at DreamWork’s press conference yesterday before their very crowded Hall H panel. The film features our favorite penguins – Skipper (McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Rico (John DiMaggio) and Private (Christopher Knights), who are recruited by the North Wind, an elite undercover inter-species task force that is dedicated to helping animals who can’t help themselves. The Penguins must work with the North Wind led by Classified (Cumberbatch) in order to prevent Dr. Octavius Brine (Malkovich) from taking over the world.

SPenguinsmith and Darnell, who worked together previously on DreamWorks Antz, tells us the film starts right after Madagascar 3 and has nothing related to the television series of the same name. There other characters from the Madagascar series will not be making an appearance. Smith stated, “They are the heroes, they are the stars.”

McGrath and Malkovich joined in on the discussion of working together – but not really directly. McGrath commented, “It’s not uncommon for the actors to meet face to face until the movie is done.” When Malkovich was asked what was the fun part of playing the villain, he responded, “Well, I don’t know if there is anything particularly naively fun about that, by definition. This one is quite fun because he seems rather happy, lazy, not particularly profound or remorseful psychopath. That, of course, is always a pleasure. It’s been a very fun character to play.”Penguins Ben

As for Cumberbatch, this was his first Comic-Con experience, but had many friends who attended this event before. He hasn’t truly experienced the convention, but plans to with a disguise. Like many other celebrities who have roamed the vendors room, he may be the cosplayer right next to you.

He was asked by a couple of reporters about the rumors surrounding him as Doctor Strange, which he turned down as simply that – rumors.

Penguins of Madagascar comes out on November 26th, 2014.
