E3 2014 – Nuclear Throne: Blowin’ up the Throne

During my travels last week at E3 I came across this cool little game that I can only explain as a mixture of Binding of Isaac and Hotline Miami, which happen to be 2 of my favorite smaller titles to have been released in the past couple of years.

In Nuclear Throne, the world has been overtaken by radiation and you have to kill everything in sight in order to move on the next area. Every 3 or so levels you face off with a boss which will test your skill level to see if you are ready to move on to the next section of the game.

Right off the bat you have 5 unique characters with 5 more that are locked until you fulfill specific conditions. Each character comes with there own unique trait and special skill. The traits will range from increased HP to more ammo per pick up, while the skills can range from dual wielding, to energy shields, or even slow motion.

So far locations that are included during development are a desert, sewers, and what looks like a construction zone, which is as far as I’ve been able to make it, in the 2 or so hours I’ve spent with it during early access.

As you kill enemies they drop radiation. Once you pick up enough you level up and are allowed to pick from 3-5 random mutations after clearing the floor. (These are different each time you play so you never have the same set up.) There are also tons of weapons that range from screwdrivers, shovels, hammers, all the way to pistols, shotguns, and crossbows. The weapon that always seems to make me kill myself is the the disc gun which fires a bouncing serrated disc that mows all down in its path including you.

So if you’re looking for a challenging game with lots of replayability that offers a different experience each time you play, or maybe just something to keep you out of the summer heat, give Nuclear Throne a shot.

The game is currently available for Steam early access at $12.99. The developer Vlambeer says that Nuclear Throne will feature seven full worlds of procedural action, four main bosses, tons of secrets, more than 75 weapons, 10 mutants, dozens of powerful mutations and local multiplayer. When the game is completed it will launch on PC, Mac, Linux, PS3/PS4, and Vita.
