Girls stab friend 19 times because of ‘Slender Man’

The Slender Man is a legend started by the internet over the last number of years and became immortalized through fans and fiction. But what happens when it is taken to the next level?

In the Milwaukee suburb, Waukesha, two young girls were charged as adults for attempted homocide. The two 12-year-old girls stabbed one of the friends 19 times! On May 31st, a bicyclist found the wounded girl on the sidewalk after she had escaped from the woods, nearly becoming the first real and noted sacrifice to the internet meme which started in 2009.

The central information center for Slender Man can be found on Creepypasta Wiki. One of the suspects noted to the police that the Slender Man is the Creepypasta wiki’s supposed leader, and to climb into his realm, a user must kill someone. Many commenters on web forums have considered the dangers of content online to being a thread to the minds of children.

The 911 audio tape was released and is located at the NBC website. The bail for both girls is set to $500,000. They face 60 years in prison if they are convicted of the crime.

One of the popular early renditions of Slender Man is through the YouTube video series Marble Hornets, which is a found footage series which chronicles the journey of students who went too far into a cult conspiracy and became hunted by the Slender Man.

CreepyPasta Wiki issued a statement via Kotaku:

Of course, only a small minority of people (mostly newcomers) on the wiki (and the Internet) truly believe what they read here. And for most people, they will not attempt replicate atrocities presented in some of the literature on the wiki. Something like this was bound to happen, considering the size of the Creepypasta community. All it takes is one person to do something insane and radical in the name of someone or something.

This is an isolated incident, and does not represent or attribute the Creepypasta community as a whole. This wiki does not endorse or advocate for the killing, worship, and otherwise replication of rituals of fictional works. There is a line of between fiction and reality, and it is up to you to realize where the line is. We are a literature site, not a crazy satanic cult.

You can read the entire document here. They have also organized a fundraiser to support the victim and her family in good faith.
