Aniplex to release Two Madoka Magica movies on Blu-ray and DVD this July

For anyone who remembers and is/was a fan of the controversial, ingenious Puella Magi Madoka Magica series 3 years ago–and the more recently released movie this past winter–Aniplex will be releasing Blu-ray and DVD versions of the first two movies, Puella Magi Madoka Magica Movies Part 1 (Beginnings) and Part 2 (Eternal) this July 15th. The movies will be theatrical adaptations of the original 13 episode series.

The original Madoka series focuses on young Madoka Kaname, who after saving a mysterious creature called Kyubey, is offered the opportunity to be granted one wish…if she agrees to a contract to become a magical girl and use her newly given powers to fight and eliminate evil and destructive witches. At the same time, an enigmatic transfer student, Homura Akemi, who is also a magical girl, attempts to stop Madoka from making the contract and has made it her goal to destroy Kyubey. Known as the ultimate end to all magical girl series by some fans, this series has a dark underlying plot. Warning: Conceptually, definitely not for the weak of heart.

For dedicated fans, there will be a Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD combo set that includes both movies in both formats (total 4 discs: 2 Blu-ray, 2 DVD). This set also includes theatrical trailers, TV CM Collections, and textless opening and endings. Language options are Japanese and English in surround sound, and English and Spanish subtitles.

Or for those who wish to save a little, there will be standard DVD editions of both movies, containing the same options as the limited edition, but without the Deluxe Booklet and the box illustrated by Junichiro Taniguchi (character design).

Pre-orders will be open starting May 27th.
