UPDATED: New Guardians of the Galaxy stills plus Gunn talks Thanos, Avengers 3 and the film

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier destroying the box office over the weekend it’s time for Marvel to focus on their next endeavor: Guardians of the Galaxy. Featured in this month’s Entertainment Weekly are three new stills and some juicy information from director James Gunn. He confirms that not only Thanos will be animated through motion-capture and is the “head of the snake” in Guardians, but also he also confirms that the film is “definitely connected to Avengers 3.”

When talking about Peter Quill/Star-Lord, the director says, “He was abducted from Earth (Missouri) at age 8 and raised in a group of thieves and smugglers called the Ravagers. He’s good with the ladies and a little bit of a dick and very lucky.”

When it comes to the frenemies, Gamora and Nebula, Gunn said, “Thanos slaughtered [Gamora’s] family and Nebula’s, then raised them together as siblings. They were bio engineered to become living weapons, so she’s really good at killing people.”

In speaking about Drax, “[He] is a little mysterious in the movie. But we do know that his wife and child were killed by Ronan and he’s very singularly focused on revenge.”

With Groot and Rocket Raccoon, Gunn said “[Groot’s] very innocent. He just wants to be liked by Rocket and do the right thing.” Gunn continued, A talking, gun-toting raccoon-like creature — and another product of bioengineering. For me, it’s not Bugs Bunny in the middle of the Avengers. It’s this little gnarled, creepy beast who is very sad and alone.”
