Glen’s 2014 Oscar Predictions

The 86th annual Academy Awards is this Sunday, and it will celebrate the best films of the past year. 2013 was one of the greatest years for films that I’ve experienced, and I managed to see a lot of these gems. In this article, I’ll give my opinion on who should win the big prizes and who will win them. But first:

Locks

There’s absolutely no chance Gravity will not win the Visual Effects award. No chance. It’ll win for Film Editing as well. Also, there’s no way the Academy will give an award to Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa or The Lone Ranger, so Dallas Buyers Club has to win for Makeup and Hairstyling. And Cate Blanchett will have her first Actress in a Leading Role trophy by the end of the night.

Snubs

The fact that Tom Hanks, Joaquin Phoenix and Ethan Hawke were snubbed for Captain Phillips, Her and Before Midnight respectively shows you just how competitive the Actor in a Leading Role category is. Julie Delpy deserves an award for playing Celine in Before Midnight  and Prisoners was an exceptional film that’s been ignored for some reason. For Original Song, I was really surprised that Inside Llewyn Davis’s “Please Mr. Kennedy” didn’t get a nomination. And Spike Jonze and Denis Villeneuve both deserved recognition for Her and Prisoners respectively.

Side Note #1

I thought many films this year were fantastic and even though I don’t say a certain movie should win, it doesn’t mean I don’t like that movie. I still think 12 Years a Slave is a masterpiece.

Side Note #2

I had to omit a few categories because, simply, I didn’t see many films in said category; I should probably watch more documentaries and short films.

Side Note #3

Even though I don’t think he had the absolute-without-a-doubt-very-best performance of the year, every fiber of my being wants Leonardo DiCaprio to win his first Oscar. He’s one of the best actors of our generation and he’s been snubbed too many times.
