The return of BBC’s Sherlock (Spoiler free!)

sherlock_2_0With a new year (FINALLY!) comes a new season of BBC’s Sherlock. After a two year hiatus, the critically acclaimed series has returned with even more mind-blowing and twisted story lines, confirming that writers/creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are just couple giant trolls.

The first of three new 90-minute episodes was a doozy, emotional and often times a little humorous, as it reunited Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) with John Watson (Martin Freeman) two years after Sherlock faked his own death. Sherlock also reveals himself as still alive to Detective Inspector Lestrade, who had my absolute favorite reaction to his return, Anderson, and landlady Mrs. Hudson. But do we finally get to find out exactly how Sherlock did it? I’ll leave that for you to find out for yourself.

34733Amanda Abbington, Freeman’s real life partner, is absolutely perfect as Mary Morstan. She is a fantastic addition of canon characters. Sherlock and Mycroft’s parents were an interesting addition as well. Fun fact: They were portrayed by Cumberbatch’s real life parents, who are also actors. There are a grip of other canon references in this episode as well, which made a fan of the original works, like myself, giddy. And, of course, no Sherlock episode would be complete without yet another cliffhanger ending. Series 3 is already shaping up to be astonishing…. and a bit frustrating.

sherlockmaryThe first episode of the third series of Sherlock officially airs in the states on PBS on January 19th.
