Picking out the most badass women of live-action TV/movie science fiction/fantasy characters was very difficult for us, but we were able to sit down together and pick them. We probably will get a lot of flak for missing some people or having people on here, but we had a good discussion among the NR writers and decided on these.
We did not place them in any order because there was no way we could rank them according to badassery.
Xena (Xena: The Warrior Princess)
Do I really need to explain why Xena, the Warrior Princess, is badass? Do I really need to? After being a ruthless WARLORD and in charge of hundreds of men, she seeks redemption from her sins and saves a lot of people – by herself, and sometimes with companion Gabrielle.
One word: Charkram.
Buffy Summers (Buffy: The Vampire Slayer)
Being “the chosen one” to save the world at such a young age can be very daunting, because you just want a normal teenage life. We’ve watched Buffy grow up and kick a lot of supernatural butt.
Did I mention she also died many times and came back from the dead… onto another network?! Damn, she’s strong.
River Song (Doctor Who)
She has the DNA of a Time Lord and married the Doctor. She also has a PhD, time traveler, and went back in time to kick Hilter’s butt. She defied a FIXED POINT IN TIME by saving the Doctor and scarified herself to save the Doctor many, many times. This woman means business.
River Tam (Firefly)
“I can kill you with my brain.”
A genius and a little insane, River was gifted in everything she did – math, dance, science, and even fighting. And damn, she could fight… a room full of Reavers.
Éowyn (Lord of the Rings)
She disguised herself as a soldier and killed the Nazgûl Witch-King. Enough said.
Captain Kathryn Janeway (Star Trek)
Captain Kathryn “Kate” Janeway of the USS Voyager was the first Federation captain to successfully travel through the Delta Quadrant and encounter new planets and aliens over the course of seven years. She was later promoted to Admiral (BEFORE Captain Picard).
Ellen Ripley (Aliens)
She was the only surviving human on her ship and goes on a rampage killing the aliens to survive. She punched Bill Paxton and told him to grow some balls. Badass. Then she gets impregnated by the Alien Queen and jumped into the fire to prevent future Aliens. THEN the corporation resurrects her into a half-Alien to kick more ass.
Zoe Washburne (Firefly)
Second-in-command of Serenity. One of the deadliest fighters ever. She’s also loyal to her crew and devoted to her husband – pilot Wash. When Wash died in front of her, she kept on going, ready to fight. Badass.
Starbuck (Battlestar Gallactica)
She was originally a dude in the original Battlestar Galactica and became all woman in the remake. She drank, smoked and fought like a man. She was cocky, unapologetic, strong and cared enough to sacrifice her own life to save everyone.
Special Agent Dana Scully (The X-Files)
As the logical half of the duo, Scully based solving cases using science and logic. When she couldn’t find a logical reason, she was open to other solutions (as illogical as they were). She was also abducted by aliens once and came back unfazed – yeah, she went right to work.
Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games)
She volunteers herself in the Hunger Games for her sister. She becomes victor of the Games, only to be sent back in the arena and becomes a symbol of the rebellion.
Princess Leia (Star Wars)
She watched her planet get destroyed. She’s the leader of the resistance. She is great with a gun and she killed Jabba the Hutt with her chains! Badassery.
Sarah Conner (Terminator)
Terminators were sent back in time to kill her and her unborn child. Yeah, she was wimpy in the beginning with Kyle Reese rescuing her, but what do you expect? She didn’t know she was going to give birth to the future leader of the resistance. With the second film, we see her transform entirely from running away to a badass fighter. Terminators coming to kill her son? Nope, she ain’t going to let that happen. And The Sarah Connor Chronicles was also badass.
Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)
Without her book smarts and wizardry skill, Harry and the rest of the wizard world would be dead. In every book, it was Hermione who either figured out the evil plot and the solution. Both her parents were Muggles and she became one of the most powerful wizards in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Seriously? She’s just so awesome.
Black Widow (The Avengers)
Only woman in The Avengers (movie) and she has no super power, just being able to kick ass. That’s it… do I need to say more?
Michonne (The Walking Dead)
She kills walkers with a sword… A SWORD!!! She is a skilled fighter and very tactical. Man, even after everything the Governor has done to her, she gets back up ready to kill.
Arya Stark (Game of Thrones)
She is a free spirit that doesn’t want to be a “lady”. She wants to fight. She watched her family murdered at the Red Wedding. Now, she is dead set on revenge.
In the book, she’s even more of a badass.
Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones)
She is the Mother of dragons. She ate a horse heart and also survived being burned alive. She had her dragon burn a man to death. Enough said.
Wonder Woman (Wonder Woman)
Strong. Independent. Amazonian. The original warrior princess (in the 1971 TV series). She beat the Nazis and help with World War II. Badass. Give her a movie, DC.
Catwoman (Batman Returns)
Not the Halle Berry Catwoman… the Michelle Pfieffer Catwoman who did not apologize for anything and did what she wanted. She could had redeemed herself in the end, but she wanted to get revenge on her boss for killing her (in the beginning of the film). Badass.
Trinity (The Matrix)
When we first meet her, she takes out six policemen and kicks ass with Morpheus. We also learn she’s a skilled hacker and thanks to the Matrix – skilled in Kung Fu. She’s willing to do anything for her man – including fighting a legion full of agents and dying for him in the end. Her kiss is so powerful – it brought Neo back from the dead. Boom.
Let’s be honest… it’s all about Hit-Girl. Without Hit-Girl, Kick-Ass would be dead. She’s the brains and the bronze of the operation. Her father taught her to be strong and literally kick ass. He died in front of her eyes and she was hellbent on continuing being a super hero. Girl can fight.
Samantha Carter (Stargate-1)
Highly intelligent as well as trained in a plethora of military weaponry. World renowned astrophysicist as well as decorated air force vet. Quickly climbs the ranks after saving the human planet at least 100 times per season.
Yukio (The Wolverine)
She is HIS bodyguard! The girl could fight and would do anything to protect the people she cared about.
Her family was killed when she became a vampire. When she finds out the truth about what happened to her family, she kills the man who created her and raised her as his own daughter. She fights through a legion of werewolves, vampires and humans and is a badass doing it.
These ladies almost made the list. Arguments ensued between the writers, so we felt that we needed to mention these badass women.
Bo Dennis (Lost Girl)
Possibly the most powerful of all Fae – a succubus. She doesn’t choose a side because she doesn’t want to and fights crime! When asked by the Faes what side she chooses, she yells “I choose humans.” Yeah!
Susan Ivanova (Babylon 5)
She was second-in-command of the space station with a long, outstanding military career. She lost her entire family, but overcame it to command her crew. She’s witty and proved herself a great leader.
So there we have it. We would had added more, but we had to be picky and choosey. What do you think? Who do you agree or disagree with? Who would you add onto the list?
