Collecting for Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace book review

Collecting for Dragon's Lair

If you’re familiar with video game history, you’ve probably heard of Dragon’s Lair. In an age when game avatars looked like LEGO pieces, Dragon’s Lair was a revelation in gaming. Dragon’s Lair was animated, and it looked more like a movie than anything you’d see at the arcade at the time. Created using animation developed by Don Bluth Studios (The Secret of N.I.M.H.), the player takes control of a dull looking, if heroic, knight named “Dirk the Daring” scouring a beautifully animated castle to save the Princess Daphne. The original Dragon’s Lair was so successful, it was granted a sequel and inspired a companion game called Space Ace. Dragon’s Lair has since cemented itself in the history of gaming, as well as in the hearts in minds of fans. So if you’re a classic video game collector, a student of video game history or a massive Dragon’s Lair fan, author Syd Bolton has created a book that’s just for you.

Collecting for Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace is a coffee table book and catalogue that chronicles hundreds of items created for Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace, from the different original game cabinets, to statuettes and animation flip books.

The book begins with a mini history lesson giving the reader an overview of the time and people involved in the creation of the original game. This section of the book is a pleasure to read and gives insight into the climate in which the game was created (on the heals of ZORK and during the animation strike of the 1980s). After getting a glimpse of the culture of development and the people involved, it’s easy for the reader to appreciate what made this game such a big deal.

The book itself is very straightforward and is split into three parts: Dragon’s Lair, Space Ace and the shared merchandise for both. This layout is simple and makes finding specialty items easy. Bolton also offers insights into each of the items listed, giving thoughts and history on everything from cabinet art to t-shirts. The bite sized information about each product gives the reader collector insight as well as advice on where some of the items can be found. Collecting for Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace also lists  trivia in “Did you know?” sections, giving the reader tidbits about the games created or the creators themselves. The sections of items available are listed without expected prices, however if the items listed are difficult to find, they are labeled with a “RARE” notice on the lower right hand corner of the space they occupy.

Space Ace

Geared primarily toward collectors and gaming historians, Collecting for Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace provides a comprehensive and clinical list of the products that are available related to the Dragon’s Lair series. If you’re a collector and a fan of either Space Ace or Dragon’s Lair, this book should have a place on your shelf. To find out more, click HERE.
