D23 Expo: Maleficent looks to be magnificent

Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Motion Pictures, introduced multiple upcoming Disney films that are slated for release in the next few years. Within that lineup was the film Maleficent, which is the untold story of one Disney’s most memorable villains. According to Bailey, the film looks to follow Maleficent from when she was a child and the events that brought her to the villain audiences have come to know her as.

She was born in a peaceful forest kingdom, and lived a fairly wonderful life. But there was conflict between her people and the humans and it threatened her homeland. After a betrayal that leaves her scorned, she vows to get revenge on those responsible for her pain. From that, you start to find out why she bears such a hatred for King Stefan.

In the clip that was shown, you can instantly tell that it’s an exact live-action copy of the scene from Sleeping Beauty. As King Stefan (Sharlto Copley) is watching the 3 fairies bestow gifts onto baby Princess Aurora, a darkness falls upon the guest-filled room. Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) herself appears, though you don’t directly see her as yet, you see the iconic horns as she walks through the parting crowd. As a side note to the scene description, Angelina Jolie looked like a mirrored image of Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty; she was simply stunning.

As Maleficent appears in front of the the Royal Family, she states that she didn’t receive an invitation. The King then addresses her saying that she isn’t welcome there.  Maleficent replies with an ever so sarcastic “What an awkward situation.” She then approaches the Princess’ crib and begins to cast a spell upon her. As she is doing this, there are scene flashes depicting pieces of the future where you see a more grown up Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) enjoying life and ultimately pricking her finger on the needle.

Just after that shot, Maleficent concludes her incantation and engulfs herself in massive green flames, then disappears. The first thing I must say, is that Angelina Jolie was meant for this role. Not just in looks, but her voice is almost an exact copy of Eleanor Audley’s Maleficent in the original Sleeping Beauty.

Bailey also brought along a special guest, Angelina Jolie herself. In speaking to the audience, Jolie states that her favorite Disney character has always been Maleficent, as she enjoyed the evilness in her. She revealed that she has always been a longtime Disney fan and that her kids are huge fans as well. She also told a story of how her brother heard about the movie being filmed and that she should immediately try out for it, which she definitely did.

Jolie jokingly said that she embodied the character so well, that she was scaring little kids on the set. A cool fact that not very many people knew, because all the kids were scared of her (Jolie), her daughter got to play the role of a very young Princess Aurora alongside her mom as Maleficent.

I honestly can’t wait for this film to release, as just from that single scene alone, it looks amazing.

Maleficent hits theaters in July 2014 and stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning and Sharlto Copley.
