Disney Infinity at SDCC 2013: Collecting figures and playing as Disney characters

At E3 2013, Disney really went big to promote the upcoming Disney Infinity game/ultimate toy collection where you can play adventures with some of your favorite Disney character from a vast library including animated/live-action movies and cartoon series. While E3 is mostly for game industry and media, San Diego Comic-Con is for general attendees, and Disney wanted to give kids and adults the chance to play the upcoming game.

As a collector this game speaks to me. The game is centered completely around figurines you place on the Infinity base, similar to Skylanders, but that is where the similarities end.

What makes Disney Infinity unique is the two modes of play, “Play Set Mode” and “Toy Box Mode“, which feature different options. Toy Box Mode allows you to play a set of games using any characters from any series, even allowing you to mix and match characters with friends. Play Set Mode are unique games created specifically for specific universes meaning you won’t be able to use characters from outside the series. Currently the announced Play Set modes are Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles, Cars, and The Lone Ranger.

I found myself easily hooked on the demo, playing it multiple times and wanting to see what each character brought. Toy mode with a stranger was pretty fun. We both started goofing around while learning the ropes of the game, leading to our first quest together. While many of the character I would love to see are still in development, I do hope to see some Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Chip and Dale, even some Hercules figures/Play Set Modes down the line.

The game lets me relive some of the best cartoon moments of my childhood. Even being able to share and play with kids would be awesome. Disney Infinity is really made for both kids and adults to play together, or even individually.

And while you could play for hours until the event ended, Disney had a few artists drawing your favorite Disney Characters, and they provided some tasty snacks and drinks, and even had a pre-order station where you could pre-order the game and receive an exclusive character figure.

Disney Infinity will release on August 18th for the Wii/Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo 3DS and PC.
