Sir Ian McKellen finishes his last scene as Gandalf

Peter Jackson and Sir Ian McKellen after filming the final scene with Gandalf.

It’s finally completed. The last and final scene from The Hobbit trilogy that stars Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf has finally come to a close. It has been 14 years since Sir Ian stepped into his role as Gandalf and it is indeed a sad day. After the third and final movie, I don’t believe anyone else will be able to play the role of Gandalf ever again.

Sir Ian McKellen Gandalf

Sir Ian is already at the age of 74, and it’s a reality that he will no longer set foot on to the green grassy plains of Middle-earth as our favorite wizard. I still remember the first time I saw Gandalf the Grey back in 1999. I was in awe of Sir Ian’s portrayal of the jovial wizard as he interacted with Frodo and his love for the Hobbits. Also, who can forget his most famous line of “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!” as he took on the Balrog of Morgoth. I still get shivers down my spine when I watch that scene.

I’d like to say for a fact that no one, and I mean NO ONE, will be able to fill Gandalf’s shoes as Sir Ian McKellen filled them. He is the bar that other actors must cross if they’re shooting for the role of Gandalf in the future. Of course this is if Hollywood somehow decides to reboot the ENTIRE franchise, and with Hollywood’s current trend in reboots, I wouldn’t be surprised.

In any case, I’d personally like to thank Sir Ian McKellen for the memories and showing his devotion to the character even though he had the chance to walk away from it the second time. Cheers to you, good sir. All of us enjoyed the journey we took with you through Middle-earth. Good bye, Gandalf.
