Tony St… I mean Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man for Avengers 2 and 3

I quote Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear UK when I say, “good news!”

It has been confirmed by Marvel that Robert Downey Jr will return as the armored avenger for Avengers 2 and 3. Details are scarce right now on the details of the contract BUT this is what Marvel had to say on the matter.

“I am Iron Man.”

Tony Stark’s famous closing line to the very first Iron Man film takes on new life today as Marvel is pleased to announce the signing of Robert Downey, Jr. to reprise the role of the “billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist.”

Under the two-picture agreement, Downey will star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3.” Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson.

Downey, Jr.’s last two Marvel films, 2012’s “Marvel’s The Avengers” and this year’s “Iron Man 3,” rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over $2.7 billion worldwide to date.

“Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is being written and directed by Joss Whedon. Featuring favorites from the first Avengers film and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen, “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is slated to begin production in March 2014 and open in theaters May 1, 2015.

Not much to go on but as a fan of Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal of Tony Stark this comes as good news to me and all the other RDJ fans out there. Both sides we’re at odds because of the news story that broke on Deadline that stated that several actors under contract for Marvel we’re displeased with the lack of pay, all when their films are generating millions of dollars in the box office. Robert Downey Jr., a big brother of sorts for the other actors, was rumored to be holding out of signing until the other actors got paid as well.

It was been well known throughout the industry that Marvel CEO (and 2nd biggest shareholder of Disney) Ike Perlmutter is a notoriously cheap man. So many predicted that Marvel would not bend to Downey’s demands and would just recast the role of Iron Man instead — much to the chagrin of general public. With the news that Robert Downey Jr. is back as the good ol’ golden avenger mean that the other Marvel actors got raises as well? Who knows, but all I know is Marvel made the right decision business wise in resigning Robert Downey Jr. for two more films. With Iron Man 3 already reaching $400 million domestically (and Marvel films with Robert Downey Jr. generally fair better with him than without him), Marvel had no choice but to resign the man if these box office numbers were to continue. With San Diego Comic-Con a few short weeks away expect more Avengers 2 casting news to come!

Marvel’s The Avengers 2 destroys theaters May 1st, 2015 and Marvel’s Avengers 3 comes out sometime in the future.
