E3 2013: Thief first impressions

I stopped by Square Enix and checked out a live demo of Thief. The gameplay reminded me of a mix between Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia for some reason. In the game, you play as a master thief named Garrett. The fictional world is a mix of steampunk and Victorian era. In the live demo, Garrett is trying to break into a mansion during a full-scale revolt by the town’s people, and steal the Heart of the Lion (a gem or diamond of if you will) from The Baron, the game’s antagonist.

In the game, Garrett can use the shadows and stealth to take out targets and steal anything that isn’t bolted down to progress. However, you can choose to not use stealth and have a visceral approach to the game as well. Garrett has the ability to move almost like smoke, making it easy to sneak by enemies undetected. You also have different types of arrows to use, to which the water arrows stood out the most; Garrett uses them to turn off torches or candles to sneak in the darkness. You also have focus powers that you can use in battles to shoot arrows, or with small tasks like picking locks. The look of the buildings, overall environment, and characters were extremely detailed. Take a look at the gameplay yourself in the video below.

Look for Thief in 2014 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
