E3 2013: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag single player impressions

At E3 this year, I was able to get an extended look at Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag. If you watched the Sony press conference, you would have already seen the first half of the demonstration. In the demo, you play as Edward Kenway, and you’re trying to find a rat within the pirates. Kenway finds the suspected betrayer and follows him into the jungle. This leads us to a full-scale attack on the pirates onshore. Kenway quickly parkours his way onto his ship and proceeds to do what any pirate would do, attack back in full force! If you didn’t see this gameplay, check out the video at the end below.

I was able to see a second demo, showcasing the vast openness of the new world aka Caribbean Islands and more side quests than ever before. As with the next generation of consoles, the graphics looked eye-poppingly amazing. This whole demo reminded me of the original Far Cry on PC as well as Crysis. The vegetation looked so real, and when you’re ducking down to be stealthy, the vegetation moves fluidly with you as your character moves. The ship battles at sea and weather aspects of the game looked, like something out of a Hollywood movie.

The recent Assassin’s Creed games have a lot of side quests, and Black Flag will be no different. You can look for lost treasures, recruit new pirates, have epic battles as sea, and explore a vast new world. I personally can’t wait to take down some ships at sea. More than just sinking the ship, you can also raid it for supplies, use it to fix and upgrade your own ship, or even give it a new purpose as a new pirate ship. Another thing that stood out to me was a second screen app that you will be able to use with the game. From what I was told, the app will be available for tablets and smart phones. The app will allow you to look at items you’ve just acquired and put interest points on your map to look at later. As of right now, it wasn’t made clear if this would be a free download or another purchase you will need to make.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be released this October for PC, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360. The game will also be out for PlayStation 4 & XBOX ONE.

I’ll leave you with the gameplay as seen at E3. Enjoy.
