Guild Wars 2 goes retro with 8-bit update
Events like this one are why I love Guild Wars 2 so much. Arenanet is going retro with today’s update, introducing the Super Adventure Box, a complete event zone where everything is turned into 8-bit low texture goodness.
“Originally, we were going to have a laugh with a fake 8-bit update, but the more the team worked on it the more we realised we had something really cool on our hands,” said Game Director Colin Johanson in a press release. “We figured; the gaming community are really going to love this, let’s expand on the concept of the Living World in Guild Wars 2 and make it for real.”
Adventurers of Tyria can find the Super Adventure Box in Rata Sum, being operated by its inventor Moto. Interacting with him will allow players to enter the box to complete jump puzzles and fight enemies, all in a surrealistic 8-bit environment filled with clouds with faces, rabbits that turn into tornadoes, pixelated lizards, and all manner of old school awesomeness.
Arenanet even put out a retro trailer that resembles the overly enthusiastic gaming commercials from the 80s. It also has Rytlock Brimstone rocking an air guitar while wearing orange shades. No joke. Watch it. And when you’re done watching it, check out the screenshots below, then read up on the update in the F.A.Q. on the official site.
