Dad mods Donkey Kong so his daughter can be the hero

Donkey-KongTalk about role reversal. There’s no arguing that there is a lack of strong female characters in the video game universe. Hellyou can pretty much say the same for TV and Movies. Recently a programming savvy dad made a mod of the classic arcade title, Donkey Kong.

Mike Mika ran into a small problem when his daughter wanted to play as the Princess in Donkey Kong. Having already played Super Mario Bros. 2, she was already familiar with the idea of the princess saving Mario. Rather than have his little girl play some other game, Mike took it upon himself to reprogram the ROM so that Pauline would now be in the place of Mario.

My three year old daughter and I play a lot of old games together. Her favorite is Donkey Kong. Two days ago, she asked me if she could play as the girl and save Mario. She’s played as Princess Toadstool in Super Mario Bros. 2 and naturally just assumed she could do the same in Donkey Kong. I told her we couldn’t in that particular Mario game, she seemed really bummed out by that. So what else am I supposed to do? Now I’m up at midnight hacking the ROM, replacing Mario with Pauline.

Pretty cool story. Cool dad.

You can actually get a glimpse of the modded Donkey Kong: Pauline Edition in the video below.
