Robert Rodriguez wants to direct a Han Solo movie

So we finally have clarification on J.J. Abrams directing the next set of Star Wars films and we also know that there will be a series of spin-off films within the Star Wars universe, not attached to the Abrams trilogy. What isn’t fully known is which characters those standalone films will center around. One of the rumors is that Yoda will have his own movie, which I don’t have a problem with.

At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, MTV had a chance to sit down and chat with director Robert Rodriguez. During the interview, he stated that he would be interested in doing a Han Solo movie by saying, “If there was something that somebody said, ‘Here, Han Solo, his own adventures.’ I’d go do that.”

In regards to the standalone films, Rodriguez said:

I don’t mind them doing more ‘Star Wars,I also like the whole idea of them doing off-shoot films, like you just have a ‘Boba Fett’ movie over here. There’s so much you can do. George has built such an enormous world that just to be waiting now again, who’s going to live up that? It’s almost like they should just branch it out, and let people play with those characters. There’s such rich stuff.

I definitely like his attitude towards the direction that Disney is taking the Star Wars franchise in. Later in the interview, Rodriguez goes on to explain that if he was to do the films, it would be sort of his own, not set in the franchise universe:

“It depends on what it was. George really inspired me to do what I’m doing now, which is the same thing he did. He originally wanted and couldn’t get the rights to Flash Gordon. He tried, couldn’t get it, so he went and wrote Star Wars, which was his complete take onFlash Gordon, even to the opening titles crawl that went that way…. I think if I asked [Lucas] for advice, he would say ‘Go make your own “Star Wars” universe, kid.’ “

I think an individual Han Solo film in the hands of Robert Rodriguez would be more than great. He definitely posses the capabilities to tell a good Han Solo story. In regards to the standalone films, what director/character combination would you like to see done? I would love to see a Boba Fett film done by either Tarantino or Guy Ritchie.
