Star Trek – There’s an app for that!

Paramount Digital Entertainment has released a Star Trek app called “Star Trek App” for the upcoming Trek movie: Star Trek Into Darkness. This was shown at CES 2013 but has finally been released on Google Play and Apple.

This app will have you to join Starfleet as a character in Star Trek, and to rise up in the ranks, you’ll need to do various activities and missions. Each mission you complete, you can unlock special movie content and even win prizes. The app comes with several missions – with new missions becoming available every week. This app is perfect for a Trekkie and IT’S FREE. It works for Androids and iPhones.

Mission types include:

  • Image Scan: Using the apps’ Image Scanner you’ll hunt for Star Trek images in the real world (i.e. outdoor billboards or posters in movie theaters)
  • Sound Scan: You’ll discover new content by using the scanner on the film’s video content (i.e. trailers, commercials, etc.)
  • Map Mission: Purposefully hunt for specific locations, or wander upon them with the app’s Geo-location technology

This app will also provide up-to-date news on the film. Mitch Lucas, product development director, has stated that using the app would open hints regarding Benedict Cumberbatch’s character.

During this Sunday’s Super Bowl game, a new extended trailer will premiere during the second quarter of the game. With this app, you could prepare to unlock the first of many exclusive Star Trek materials by scanning the Star Trek Into Darkness commercial.

The Star Trek into Darkness app is now available for iOS and Android at Apple’s App Store ad at Google’s Play Store.
