People are suddenly supporting Dredd now…

Final Judge Dredd 3D poster

Okay, so you guys weren’t there to help support Dredd when it was in theaters. I thought it was a very fun and violent action film that deserved better at the box office. With a budget of $50 million, it made only a little over $13 million at the domestic box office. That looks pretty sad, but if you add in international gross, the total comes out to be over $32 million. That’s still not good enough though. Maybe the 3D at the end of the title turned you off?

Now thanks to the power of home video, Dredd is currently the top-selling new release DVD/Blu-ray of 2013 with 650,000 units sold. It’s also the top digital download for the week.

Don’t celebrate just yet. As of today on Amazon, Dredd on Blu-ray is $21.96 and the DVD is $18.99. Using the price of Amazon as an example and estimating that the total of Blu-ray sales are about 50%, that would make the average sale to be $20.48 per unit. With the total units sold so far, that would make the total sales of Blu-ray and DVD to be over $13 million (hey, that’s the same as the total domestic box office gross). Now if we add in worldwide box office gross and DVD/Blu-ray sales, the amount would be over $45 million. It’s still hardly enough to break even, but at least we’re almost there. Now the hope of a Dredd sequel is closer than originally thought, so help out and buy a Blu-ray today!

The verdict is in and Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), a leading global entertainment company, announced today that the home entertainment release of DREDD claimed the number one spot on the DVD sell-through and Blu-ray charts with 650,000 units sold, making it the best-selling new release title of the year. Blu-ray units accounted for nearly 50% of week 1 POS at retail. In addition, the critically acclaimed thriller, starring Karl Urban (Star Trek) as the titular character Judge Dredd, was the top film download for the week, outpacing all other titles in digital sales as well.
