Del Toro confirms intentional Portal reference in Pacific Rim

There’s no doubt that the first official trailer for Pacific Rim peaked a lot of people’s interest. What’s not to like about giant robots battling out with humongous monsters to save the world? One thing that many Valve fans noticed from the trailer was a cameo appearance of everyone’s favorite homicidal AI, GlaDOS.

During a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, Guillermo Del Toro revealed that the reference is intentional and he himself is a big fan of the game.

“I wanted very much to have her, because I’m a big Portal fan, but just as a wink. She’s not cake-obsessed.”

Del Toro reveals in the interview that he did actually get GlaDOS voice actor Ellen McLain for the part and even asked permission from Valve to use the voice’s likeness.

“I said, ‘Look, there’s no A.I. I’d rather have than GlaDOS. The filter we’re using is slightly less GLaDOS. Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GlaDOS.”

This is not the first time Valve has done some sort of film crossover thingy. Back in April of 2011, it was revealed that a hidden playable teaser for Super 8 was included in the PC version of Portal 2.

All in all, it is a very cool nerdy reference and it seems as though Pacific Rim is definitely one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2013.
