Yes, score one for video game music! Many award shows don’t really matter to us, but the fact that the Grammys considers Thatgamecompany’s Journey worthy enough for nomination is a big step in having people accept that video game can be art. Journey will be competing against the likes of Dark Knight Rises, Hugo, Tintin, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Artist in the Best Score Soundtrack for the Visual Media category.
If you want to be really technical, that honor should really go to Sid Meier’s Civilization IV. Christopher Tin originally composed the “Baba Yetu” song for the game, but since he released his debut album, the song won a Grammy for that instead. Check out the Journey track, “Nascence,” by composer Austin Wintory.
