Many fans and sites have been lead to believe that The Wolverine was a prequel. Things started to get weird when there was mention of Jean Grey’s character having a cameo. Director James Mangold told Empire that The Wolverine takes place after the events of X-Men 3.

“Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all,” reveals Mangold. “Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him.”

This is terrible news. That means that X-Men 3 is canon in FOX’s X-Men universe. With the addition of having Mark Millar as a consultant to help with FOX’s Marvel franchises, X-Men and Fantastic Four, I would think that they would actually try to make things better. So far, it looks like an X-Men reboot is out of the question.

So, will we see a flashback sequence or Wolverine dreaming about Jean Grey? I really don’t care. I’m just hoping that Mark Millar will actually have some power to sway FOX into rebooting X-Men. Let’s hope Fantastic Four fairs better.

The Wolverine opens in theaters July 26, 2013.
