Bond producer interested in Christopher Nolan; Idris Elba wants to be the first black James Bond

With Skyfall being released tomorrow for our UK fans, and in two weeks for the US crowd. There has been tons of great news regarding Great Britain’s iconic super spy. So let’s get started shall we!

During the press run for Inception, Christopher Nolan has said that he’s very interested in doing a James Bond film in the future. He said to BBC,

I’ve loved the Bond films since I was a kid. For me, they’re always about the expansiveness of cinema. The first Bond films set up infinite possibilities about the world they create. I’d love to do a Bond film.

While on the press run for The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan again reiterated his desire to work on a James Bond movie, but it just has to be the right situation and the right time in their cycle of things.”

Well it turns out that the director’s desire to work on Bond hasn’t fallen on deaf ears. Turns out that Bond associate producer Gregg Wilson is just as interested in having Christopher Nolan direct one of their movies. Speaking with Digital Spy, he tells them,

We would of course be interested to have a discussion with him. We would like to do the same type of movie. It would be a dream to be with Nolan. But we always have an open mind when it comes to directors.

Current director Sam Mendes has stated that Skyfall was partly inspired by Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight. If Skyfall were a hit, which I’m sure it will be, Christopher Nolan would be high atop the list of directors for the next Bond movie. It would be a dream come true for any Bond fan to have Christopher Nolan direct a James Bond movie. If and when, Christopher Nolan does his Bond film, will its star be Daniel Craig or…

Yes, people Luther and Thor actor Idris Elba has met with producer Barbara Broccoli about the possibility of Elba playing James Bond. When speaking with reporters, Naomie Harris confirmed the rumors.

I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris [Elba] and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli [James Bond producer] and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.

Elba has iterated before that he was more than eager to take on the iconic British role, should the situation ever arise.

I personally have not seen Luther but friends that have, can completely see Elba take on Bond. Of course, casting Elba in an iconic role that has been primarily dominant by white actors will surely bring on some controversy. This will probably come from the same detractors that complained about Elba taking on the role of Heimdall in Thor, a character who’s white in the comics. In my opinion that has worked out pretty well, Heimdall had that powerful gravitas that Heimdall should possess. Bringing that to the role of James Bond would keep the gritty, rugged Bond that Daniel Craig has brought.
