Assassin’s Creed film script underway with partnership of Ubisoft and New Regency
Posted 12:40 pm on Monday, October 22nd, 2012 by John 'Spartan' NguyenWith Ubisoft Motion Pictures (yes, they have their own movie division) teaming up with New Regency Productions, we’re one step closer to having the Assassin’s Creed film become a reality. The last news we heard about the film was when Michael Fassbender was attached to play the lead character. As of now, the screenplay is being worked on immediately.
The good news is that Ubisoft will have control over the film’s key plot points. Who better to keep the film in check than the company that started the franchise. The biggest problem I have with a lot of video game adaptations is when Hollywood decides to mess the story and characters (Resident Evil, anyone?).
“Ubisoft chose to partner with New Regency because they are a talent- and filmmaker-driven company, with the same independent and creative mindset that we have at Ubisoft Motion Pictures,” said Jean-Julien Baronnet, chief executive officer, Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “Bringing aboard New Regency’s renowned production and distribution expertise while maintaining our own creative and financial flexibility ensures that Assassin’s Creed will be a high-quality film that respects the lore and fans of the video game franchise.”
New Regency has a few awesome flicks under its belt. It has produced films like Fight Club, Heat, and Man on Fire.
“We wanted to do everything we could to secure the rights to Assassin’s Creed, which Ubisoft has maintained with such care and quality over the years,” said Brad Weston, president and chief executive officer, New Regency. “Having just finished working with Michael on Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave (with Plan B) made the partnership even more irresistible.”
With Ubisoft having a big hand in the production of the film, we will definitely get a story that will be canon in the Assassin’s Creed universe. Many have said that Fassbender will star as Desmond Miles, but I can’t picture that. What I can picture him as is a kick-ass assassin. He was a Spartan in 300 and Magneto in X-Men: First Class.
