Joss Whedon responds to TDKR cinematographer’s comment about The Avengers being ‘appalling’

Wally Pfister, the cinematographer for The Dark Knight Rises, made a comment about how The Avengers movie was “appalling” and how it made him go “bonkers. Many fans of The Avengers took it as him being jealous of The Avengers’ success. Pfister also criticized the way The Avengers handled certain camera angles, as if they’re trying to show off the expensive set.

Entertainment Weekly took it upon themselves to reach out to Mr. Joss Whedon, director of The Avengers, to see if he had anything to say about Pfister’s comment.

He replied with:

“I’m sorry to hear it, I’m a fan.”

Well there you have it. I was hoping for a witty comment, but Mr. Whedon is trying to be civil about this. Good man.

I like the comment, it is kinda the “I’m not man, I’m just disappointed” thing. It is crazy for these people to make comments like that on the record though, Hollywood is a small place and it is easy to piss off people to the point you cost yourself work down the road.

The two movies seem like a silly comparison…. Both are superhero films, yes, but very different superheroes. Schumacher’s Batman renditions clearly show the caped crusader does better with a dark story (like Burton and Nolan’s portrayal). I don’t know if I would like a dark Avengers as much… while it may not be a perfect movie, I liked seeing the Avengers expensive set.
