Dexter Season 7 Episode 3 “Buck the System” recap
Posted 9:12 pm on Wednesday, October 17th, 2012 by Narvin SeegoolamLast week’s episode ended with Deb trying to help Dexter kick his killing habit by sticking to him like glue. This week, we pick up after the convict Randall jumped in front of a semi-truck. The episode starts off with Dexter in the post office sending a package addressed to Miami Metro forensic lab. I wonder what’s inside? As he’s waiting in line, he gets these flash urges of killing someone like a crack addict needing their fix. Deb snaps him out of it, hurrying him so that they can get to the morning briefing.
During the briefing, Masuka notices that Deb has been giving Dexter the evil eye. As Dexter is processing what Masuka is saying, he goes into another flash urge that has him stabbing Masuka in the neck. After he snaps out of it, Dexter is tasked with taking a DNA sample from someone in custody. The guy pushes him to the point where Dexter starts to strangle him. Deb bursts in and pulls Dexter apart from the guy. Outside, Dexter tells Deb that he feels too constricted and that it’s not helping him. He explains that if he continues with Harry’s code, everything will be okay. Deb then agrees to back off and give him some room.
Back in his office, Dexter pulls out a file for a guy named Ray Speltzer. Apparently Speltzer was accused of multiple murders, but no conviction was able to be passed on him. Dexter then starts to keep tabs on him beginning with joining the gym that Speltzer works out at. All the while Deb is keeping an eye on Dexter from outside the gym. Cut back to Miami Metro, and the blonde stripper named Nadia is paying Quinn a visit. She reveals to him that her friend that was killed, was wearing a bracelet that belonged to her and that she was hoping to get it back. Quinn then skims an evidence list and tells her that the bracelet wasn’t recovered and is still missing.
Nadia goes back to the club to inform Isaak of what she’s found out so far. It is revealed that the bracelet has a GPS tracker on it so that they can follow whomever when trafficking drugs. Isaak tells Nadia to get close to Quinn as well as decides to bring in their IT guy to figure out the GPS tracking. Back at the lab, a package arrives for forensics and Masuka opens it up with Louis. The missing hand from the Ice Truck Killer case is in the box with a note attached to it addressed to Louis. Masuka proceeds to fire Louis. Randall’s mother then came into the station to speak with Deb regarding some information that she never gave police.
Dexter is tasked with sifting through the articles that was given to Deb from Randall’s mother. Dexter then determines that all of the items that were there, are all trophies. Louis returns home to find a distraught Jamie watching a video of him and a hooker. Louis tries to explain that it happened before they dated, but Jamie points out the shirt he’s wearing in the video is the one she gave him for his birthday. Needless to say, Jamie dumps Louis on the spot and storms out. Dexter – 2, Louis – 0.
Dexter told Deb he was hitting the gym after work, but found him at the local bar instead. Dexter tells her he did it on purpose so that he can talk to her about Speltzer and that he plans on killing again. He even points out that he’s currently tailing Speltzer as well, to which Deb freaks out on Dexter because of it. Dexter proceeds to explain the code he follows and how he knows that Speltzer plans on killing again. Deb doesn’t buy it and walks out. Dexter then decides that he has to prove Speltzer’s guilt to Deb so that she would understand and give permission to kill.
Dexter shows up at the cemetery where Speltzer works to spy on him. He notices that Speltzer was entering a mausoleum that has nothing to do with him. After Speltzer leaves, Dexter prepares to break in when he gets a call from Deb taking him away from breaking in. Back at the strip club, Isaak’s IT guy was able to trace the GPS on the missing bracelet back to a marina slip. Dexter arrives in Deb’s office just so she could question his whereabouts. Dexter admits to spying on Speltzer and tries to let Deb know that something is being hidden at the cemetery.
She abruptly cuts him off and basically makes fun of him for his notions or gut feeling on Speltzer. Dexter then reminds her that it was his instincts that helped her solve so many crimes. Deb loosens up a little, but still tells Dexter not to kill Speltzer. She also sends him with Batista to get a DNA sample from Randall’s old girlfriend, Hannah McKay. Hannah is ruled out of the murders because she was only 15 when she was around Randall, but still needs to give the DNA sample to officially eliminate her from the suspects. Dexter also has an awkward moment with Hannah while trying to get the DNA sample.
Back at the station, Deb reaches out to LaGuerta to try and get some help on pursuing Speltzer. LaGuerta is reluctant to help, but decides to at least put a cop on the tail of Speltzer to keep an eye on him. Isaak and his crew head down to the marina slip where the GPS last pinged to find Louis with a drill on Dexter’s boat trying to sink it. Isaak then gets some info about Dexter before shooting Louis in the head leaving blood all over the boat. I would have rather seen Dexter kill him, but at least he’s dead.
We cut to Quinn in his apartment spending some quality time with Nadia. She tells Quinn that she actually likes him and can’t lie to him. She reveals that she is supposed to find out whatever info she can from him about the case. Quinn makes a deal with her that involves him feeding her certain information in return for any details she can find out about Anderson’s murder. We go to Speltzer’s place where a girl he was talking to at the bar comes over to hang out.
While this is going on, Dexter breaks into the mausoleum to find a shrine as well as evidence from one of Speltzer’s victims. Deb calls Dexter and leaves a message telling him that she’s going to drive by Speltzer’s house before heading home just to make sure everything is okay. This is after she releases the cops that were watching his place to take another call. Inside the house, Spelzter attacks the girl and says he wants to play a game as Deb pulls up. Outside, as Deb is getting ready to take off, she notices something weird with the lights inside the house, which prompts her to get out and investigate.
As Dexter is leaving the mausoleum, he gets Deb’s message and decides to hastily head to Speltzer’s place. Deb goes up to the house and starts banging on the door after she hears a muffled scream from inside. We then see Speltzer dressed sort of like a viking, chasing the girl through a sort of death maze complete with strobe lights and heavy metal music blaring. Deb shoots the lock off the door and heads inside; at the same time some screams are heard. As she traverses the death maze with her gun drawn, she gets attacked by Speltzer who seems to have the upper hand.
Luckily, Dexter gets there in time to save Deb by knocking out Speltzer with a piece of wood. They find the girl beaten to death and earrings ripped out as trophies. As they find her, they notice that Speltzer escaped through a window. We cut to the entire place closed off by police. Deb tells Dexter that she had some cops check out the mausoleum, but found it open and and cleaned out. Speltzer got away.
Deb then decides that letting Dexter kill Speltzer would have meant the girl would have lived. She finally understands why he does what he does, even though she may not agree with it. She confirms that it’s a necessary evil, but she is still weirded out by the blood slides. She suggests that Dexter move back to his place as well. Dexter tries to reassure her that nothing’s changed, but Deb feels otherwise and that things will never be the same again.
