James Gunn confirms directorial duties for Guardians of the GalaxyPosted 11:49 am on Tuesday, September 18th, 2012 by Mark Pacis
It’s official, James Gunn has announced that he will be writing and directing the Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel Studios. On his official Facebook page, James Gunn made a lengthy post confirming he is now the director.
For a month or so there’s been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Until now I haven’t said anything, because I’m trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing Guardians of the Galaxy. As
a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we’re committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique. I am incredibly excited. I am also incredibly grateful to the fans and the press for all their words of encouragement and support regarding my involvement with this project since the news first leaked. Thanks – you have, honestly, touched and overwhelmed me. And that’s it for now. Other than the occasional photos of my dog and cat here on Facebook, I’ll talk to you again in August 2014 when Guardians is released!
What’s interesting is that he is also rewriting the script that the original writer Nicole Periman wrote before Christopher McCoy was hired to rewrite the original. This will be the third rewrite of the script already. Also, I personally have not seen any of his work, Slither or Super, so I cannot comment on how well his directorial style will translate to Guardians. What I do know is that Joss Whedon has recently given James Gunn his seal of approval, and in my book I trust anything that Joss endorses. So if he says James Gunn will be fine as the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy, then consider me a midnight showing attendee on August 1st. With a director now in place, expect casting news to come in within the next few months. Guardians of the Galaxy comes out August 1st, 2014.
