Is the director of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” departing the sequel?Posted 6:59 pm on Monday, September 17th, 2012 by Mark Pacis
Today has been a crazy day for Fox, its studio CEO Tom Rothman is forced out, and now it seems that Rupert Wyatt, director of the highly awesome Rise of the Planet of the Apes, is exiting the sequel. A source told Deadline that Wyatt’s departure from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is similar to the reasons that Gary Ross departed from directing Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Wyatt did not feel comfortable with making the May 23rd, 2014 release date that Fox has announced.
Fox isn’t talking, which isn’t surprising, but Wyatt’s departure could cause a blow for rebooted franchise. Fox will probably not take this lying down, with a big franchise hit on their hands the studio could give the sequel to the hands of a more big name director. The studio does like the script that the original Rise writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have turned in, and they are gearing up to make the release date come May 2014. We’ll keep you guys updated on further news.
