Y: The Last Man film might finally come true
Posted 5:12 pm on Tuesday, September 11th, 2012 by Narvin SeegoolamFor anyone that has read the Y: The Last Man graphic novel series, you know that it would actually make a good film, but a better TV series. For those that haven’t read it, the basic premise is that virus/plague spread over the planet killing every mammal species that has a Y-chromosome. For some reason, a guy named Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand, weren’t affected by the virus.
Creating a movie for this has been talked about since as far back as 2003. Since then, it’s been a battle, with nothing really coming to fruition. Well it seems that New Line Cinema is still interested in doing the film and they’re quite pleased with recent draft submitted by Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia. Both of which previously wrote for the show, Jericho.
Now since the script looks like it has potential, the studio will now undertake the task of finding a director. There has been many directors that have been interested in the making the film, but none have panned out. Most recent of those is Disturbia director DJ Caruso, that left the project about 2 years ago.
Here’s what Caruso had to say when he left the project:
I didn’t think that you could take Yorick’s story and put it in to a two-hour movie and do it justice. That was sort of the difference. I think that New Line, working with Warner Bros. in their new relationship, just felt reluctant thinking that we can’t leave this thing open. If you are familiar with the comic book, you know it’s just mind-boggling. If you look at what my buddy Frank Darabont did with ‘The Walking Dead,’ you think [...] is that the best thing for it? Because there is just so much great stuff, so no, I’m not involved with that anymore.
I’m not too sure what director would be fit for this type of film. In all honesty, I agree with Caruso. I think it should be made into a series, in the same way The Walking Dead was done, not a film. There is too much content to try and fit into a 2 hour movie and a lot will have to be left out. If that happens, you tend to lost a lot of minute, but important moments that happen in the comic.
