When everyone first heard that Spike Lee was doing a remake of Chan-woo Park’s classic Oldboy, we freaked out. The only thing that was going through my head was “He’s going to ruin it.” It’s not that I didn’t think he was capable, but trying to recreate a film that was so good would be difficult. About 2 years ago, Steven Spielberg tried to do a remake with Will Smith, but it never came to fruition.

To Lee’s credit, he was finally able to get a distributor for the film. An up and coming company called FilmDistrict will be handling these duties, as it did for The Rum Diary, Lockout, Insidious, Drive and the upcoming Red Dawn. Not only was Lee able to secure that, but an official movie description has been released by the distributor as well.

OLDBOY follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive.  When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and ultimately to an elusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

Josh Brolin, Sharlto Copley and Elizabeth Olsen are just a few of the big names associated with the film. Also confirmed for the remake is Samuel L. Jackson and Nate Parker. There is speculation that the new film will be darker than the original. I’m not too sure how they’ll pull it off, but now I’m even more interested to see what they’ll do. Obviously, if you haven’t seen the original film, then you have no idea what I’m talking about. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
