Michael Keaton will replace Hugh Laurie as main villain in RoboCop

Yesterday we reported that Hugh Laurie had dropped out of RoboCop and that MGM were looking for replacements. Many, including myself, thought that Clive Owen was at the top of the list. Well as a shot out of left field, Michael Keaton has been announced as the replacement main villain. Keaton hasn’t done much acting in a while, with his most recent film being The Other Guys with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.

Director Jose Padilha commented on Keaton joining the cast:

“Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place. It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets.”

Padilha seems to be in good spirits now that Keaton is on board. Hopefully the movie won’t suck too bad. RoboCop hits theaters on August 9, 2013.
