RoboCop runs into a lot of trouble with a disgruntled director, a major dropout and Clive Owen?

As if it seems that the RoboCop remake is already heading in a downward spiral, things continue to look even more dismal. Last week, a possible script leak revealed that RoboCop is more akin to a Transformer, rather than a cyborg cop. If that wasn’t bad enough, the director Jose Padilha has been described as going through hell for filming. Brazilian filmaker Fernando Meirelles and close friend of Padilha, had a recent interview with the South American film website Cinemacom Rapadura. During the interview, Meirelles recalled a conversation he had with Padilha about the RoboCop reboot.

I talked to José Padilha for a week by phone. He will begin filming Robocop. He is saying that it is the worst experience. For every 10 ideas he has, 9 are cut. Whatever he wants, he has to fight. “This is hell here,” he told me. “The film will be good, but I never suffered so much and do not want to do it again.” He is bitter, but it’s a fighter.

The thing to remember is that the quote was translated from Portugese and that it’s not the direct words of Padilha. Even so, it does seem like Padilha is under a great deal of stress for the film. And if that’s not enough, the main villain for the film and head of the Omnicorp Corporation, Hugh Laurie, has dropped out of the film. There hasn’t been any reason stated yet, as to why Laurie left, but it does leave a gaping hole in the cast.

There is a sliver of a silver lining left though. MGM is currently looking into a handful of actors to fill the role, with Clive Owen at the head of the class. Even though I think Hugh Laurie would have been great, Owen would be a great addition to an already large cast that includes Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel and Jackie Earle Haley. Who would you like to see as the main villain? RoboCop hits theaters on August 9, 2013.
