Sony to shut down WipEout developer Sony Liverpool

Today, Sony has decided to shut down Sony Liverpool, developer of the popular sci-fi racing franchise WipEout. The news first broke on a forum post on GRcade where original poster commented that “Sony just closed Studio Liverpool (formerly Psygnosis) All projects cancelled.” The rumors seemed to have been backed up by SCE Liverpool developer, Sandy Lobban tweeting “End of an era today for Studio Liverpool. Honoured to have been a part of it.”. Now on WipEout’s facebook page it became official as Sony Liverpool said it’s final farewell.

The studio began in 1984 as Psygnosis, and was acquired by Sony in 1993 to become Sony Computer Entertainment Liverpool. It played an important role in the success of PlayStation with the release of WipEout in 1995 and then Colony Wars in 1996. It has recently developed WipEout HD for the PS3, and WipEout 2048 for the PlayStation Vita. Thanks SCE Liverpool for all your hard work over the years. We had a lot of fun playing WipEout.
