Free enslaved androids from Boston in Fallout 4?

If there is one game that I can say legitimatized the whole “next-gen” console (XB360/PS3) feel for me, I would not hesitate to say Fallout 3. Fallout 3 completely shattered my world of what I thought a video game could be. Never had I had so much control over story and the final outcome of the game. I could just wander the wastelands for hours without even thinking about the main storyline. Fallout 3 was the true epitome of the sandbox genre. It’s unfortunate that New Vegas was plagued by so many bugs, but with Skyrim now sinking into the distance, I couldn’t help but wonder if Bethseda had any plans to return to the Wastelands anytime soon.

Sadly, E3 2012 came and went and there was no news of a new Fallout game. Recently, a rumor has been flying around that Bethesda is working on Fallout 4, and it will be set in Boston.

According to one Reddit user, who is apparently working on the project, the rumors are true.

“In case you haven’t heard, Bethesda has recently been scoping out and researching Boston. They also have a strong connection to MIT. I may or may not be an MIT employee. But that’s really all I can say for fear of losing my job.

I am telling you it will take place in Boston.”

You might take this man’s word with a grain of salt, but according to the Fallout wikia page, Massachusetts is referenced in Fallout 3 as the Commonwealth. While there are four states that ACTUALLY categorized themselves as commonwealths, Bethesda lead designer Emil Pagliarulo clarified in an interview with 1UP that Fallout 3 is referencing Massachusetts as THEE Commonwealth.

If you remember in “The Replicated Man” quest from Fallout 3, Dr. Zimmer asked that you hunt down an android that escaped from “The Institute.” The Institute is located in the Commonwealth and is apparently super technologically advanced. The Institute houses many scientist that have perfected how to create Synthetic Humanoid Androids. They have fake skin, blood, they even speak, breathe and eat the same way people do. Unfortunately, Androids in the Commonwealth have no rights and are seen as nothing more than machines. There’s even a special police unit tasked with recovering escaped androids, Synth Retention Bureau.

Luckily, the “Railroad” opposes the enslavement of androids. Much like the Underground Railroad did for slaves in the 19th century, the Railroad aids the escape of sentient androids from their creators and even helps human slaves too. You meet the Railroad in the Capital Wastelands in Fallout 3. So it is a good chance that if any of the rumors are true, this will like play a big part of the new installment of Fallout.

Do you think Fallout 4 should take place in Boston? How will the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave factor into this? Where’s Liberty Prime at? Is Three Dog still on the air? Stay tuned children!
