Nerd nation rejoice!

In a Walt Disney Investors Conference Call, Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced that Joss Whedon is coming back to write and direct the Avengers 2 for Marvel. Not only that, but it was also announced that Joss Whedon will be developing a live-action Marvel TV show to be aired on ABC.

A thesaurus cannot express how happy, excited, blessed, blissful, cheerful, delighted, ecstatic, glad, intoxicated, peppy, lively, thrilled, and upbeat I am over the news that Joss Whedon would be returning to the write and helm the Avengers sequel. He is the sole purpose that the Avengers “experiment” actually worked. Let’s face it, the man knows how to write an ensemble film. My hope is that Joss Whedon is brought on board early to help as a consultant for the Phase 2 movies.

Although the news of Joss Whedon coming back isn’t surprising to some. What is surprising was the announcement that Joss Whedon is developing a live-action Marvel TV show based in the cinematic universe. Earlier this week, Guillermo Del Toro gave an update to Collider on the ABC Hulk TV show, saying that:

I had one meeting with Marvel after Avengers and we had a very, very good chat. We have a writer that we want to bring on board, a very, very concrete name. I can’t reveal it, but we want to wait for that writer. It’s a writer who is otherwise engaged. So right now we are in a holding pattern until that writer becomes free. Then we’re going to do a new draft of the script.

So, let’s do the math here. Writer with a very, very concrete name (Joss Whedon), holding out until the person is free (Joss Whedon is on vacation), to help write the script for a Hulk TV show set in the Marvel universe for ABC (Joss Whedon helping develop a show for ABC)…

It would make complete sense for Joss Whedon help on the Hulk TV show, as the Hulk was the show stealer of the entire movie. This might also be a way for Marvel to use another medium to bring in characters for the Avengers 2. Do I think he will be the showrunner for the Hulk show? No, absolutely not. It’s already stressful just working on the story for the Avengers sequel, let alone being responsible for the day-to-day duties of a TV show. My guess is that Joss will develop a general plot for the Hulk TV show, and then consult on the show.

Of course everything is all speculation. Nothing has been announced for the Hulk TV show, what property Joss is developing a TV show for, or it might be a brand new property Joss has created.

The rumored release date of Avengers 2 is set for 2015, although no official confirmation has been announced yet. Iron Man 3 will be released May 3rd, 2013. Thor: The Dark World will be released November 8th, 2013. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for April 4, 2014. Guardian of the Galaxy is set for August 1st, 2014. Ant-Man has a release date that has yet to be determined.
