E3 2012: Hands-on with Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Sega realized many people love racing games. So what better way to promote the Sega brand then to have Sega characters. So they put Sonic and his friends in an all new racing game. Sonic has spent the last two decades putting a stop to Eggman’s evil schemes of trying to take over the world and by defeating Eggman’s army of robots. Sonic has also tried his hand in fighting games, puzzle games, and skateboarding. Now we’ll get to be behind the wheel as a Sonic character in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

It was odd seeing the fastest thing alive needing a racing car. He can go faster than the speed of light. But if that happened, we wouldn’t need a racing game, now would we? In the span of a race, you will be racing on the ground in your vehicle, transforming it to fly in the air and transforming it into a sea vehicle.

That Golden Axe Stage!

At E3 Sega set up a racing experience for fans using 2 different tracks; one inspired from Golden Axe series, and the other inspired by the Panzer Dragoon series. The demo featured  more than 10 characters to play with, and while Sonic or Shadow would normally be my first choice, my eyes beheld something more exciting, and that was Vyse, the main character from Skies of Arcadia. If you aren’t familiar with the title, it was one of the best RPGs on the Sega Dreamcast in 2000 and was ported to the Gamecube in 2003.

Welcome back Vyse we missed you!

If you played the previous Sonic racing title or Mario Kart, then you should already be familiar with the style of gameplay that involves beating everyone else to the finish line, getting item capsules that unlock weapons to help you speed up or take down enemies.

All-Stars moves are back and can be unlocked by your racing abilities and tricks. The better you do the faster it fills and will also be usable online. So far 16 new tracks will be added while only 2 were shown in the demo.

It does play like every other character inspired racing game you ever played, and there are quite a few. The transition between air, ground, and water is pretty fast. This is what separates this game from the rest, and being able to use the Sega Universe of characters, it is a great selling point, I wonder what other characters Sega will be adding to the game closer to the late 2012 release.
