The Avengers to get a Director’s Cut theatrical release?
Posted 10:01 am on Wednesday, June 13th, 2012 by John 'Spartan' NguyenRumor has it that Disney and Marvel are planning on releasing a Director’s Cut of The Avengers in theaters, with 35 minutes of additional footage tacked, at the end of summer. Right now, everybody and their moms are loving the movie, as it is now the No. 3 film of all time worldwide. You know who’s loving the Avengers more? Disney and Marvel. Disney has been doing good with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but I guess that’s not enough, since they want The Avengers to take the No. 1 spot. It will be a tough climb, since James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic are still king of the world…wide box office gross.
If the Director’s Cut theatrical release is true, I don’t think it’ll be able to do any good now, since The Avengers is currently at around $1.4 billion. Titanic is currently at $2.2 billion, and Avatar is twice as much with $2.8 billion.
A better plan would be to wait for the Blu-ray release (they wouldn’t want the Blu-ray sales to suffer), then wait half a year to release the Director’s Cut in theaters. If they do it that way, they can make more money with a Director’s Cut Blu-ray release afterwards. Then again, Joss Whedon already mentioned that the initial Blu-ray release will have 30 minutes of deleted scenes.
