Facebook smartphone on its wayPosted 6:51 pm on Thursday, May 31st, 2012 by Steve Ahmad
When you couldn’t possibly get any more connected in the social network, guess again. Facebook is planning a release of its own smartphone by next year. The newly public company is planning on ways for gaining revenue beyond creative advertisement campaigns. The company has hired more than half a dozen software and hardware engineers who worked on Apple’s iPhone. Code named “Buffy” and behind some of Apples creative team including a partnership group of Taiwan’s HTC, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is very interested in pushing the mobile hardware version of the social network through the gates.
“Mark is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms,” – Facebook employee.
Good luck Facebook. With only a handful of smartphones that truly break ground in today’s market, Facebook will have a huge hurdle to enthuse consumers to purchase their device. Can we see a time where we connect only by Facebook? Imagine taking orders at a restaurant through Facebook then adding your server as a friend under the “Good” or “Bad” server friends group. Restaurants are already using Apple products like the iPhone and iPad to take patrons orders. Relaxing at a coffee shop? Before making small talk how about the ability to check the local network via smartphone to pre-screen your possible new acquaintance. If you fear the social network, look at the bright side. At least we will get a free phone with a two year contract, right?
