Disney has announced that The Avengers is set to cross the $1 billion mark globally on Sunday, May 13th, just 19 days after its release. It set a record on its domestic opening weekend with $207.4 million at the box office, the biggest domestic opening ever. The Avengers also set a new second-week record with an estimated $103.2 million domestically.

With news this big, it’s no surprise that Disney has already announced plans for The Avengers 2, hopefully with Thanos still planned as the main villain.

With all these record-breaking announcements, I’m thinking which future movies will be able to topple The Avengers. Will The Dark Knight Rises opening weekend be able to overshadow The Avengers’ opening? The Dark Knight’s opening weekend reached over $158 million. So it’s a possibility that the sequel will be able to take on the Avengers giant.

Let’s see if the next solo Marvel hero movies will be as big as the Avengers too. Iron Man 3 is set to be released on May 3, 2013; Thor 2 on November 15, 2013; and Captain America on April 4, 2014.
