Pokémon Conquest, a strategic Summer release

For all of you out there with nothing to do this Summer, well, this could be what fills that huge gap between school years. When I heard that Nintendo was teaming up with Tecmo Koei Games, I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of new Pokémon game they would make; especially considering that Koei has mainly dealt with overly complex strategic games in the past. Would the Pokémaniacs be into that? I don’t have the answer to that last question, but I can tell you that Pokémon Conquest will be making its way to DS in North America on June 18th, and it will be a turn-based strategic game akin to the Fire Emblem series.

Pokémon gets even more strategic.

The story involves Nobunaga attempting to take over the Ransei region. Nintendo’s press release stated that players would be “conquering all 17 kingdoms, and ultimately uniting the kingdom will awaken the Legendary Pokémon and save the land from destruction.” Whoa, guys, I think everyone kind of wanted to discover the ending on their own. Then again, maybe the plot will involve a second playthrough with players trying to take the land back from the Legendary Pokémon–totally plausible. Something that should keep the interest level up after extended play is the fact that each of the 17 kingdoms will give players access to a different warlord, each having their own victory conditions, storyline, and abilities.

Conquering a kingdom will give access to new training grounds, shops, and mines containing the game’s currency. Warlords will be able to link with Pokémon before battle to strategically prepare. Presumably, linking with Pokémon will offer certain advantages such as stat changes, or specific terrain defense/offense.

Players will need to employ new strategies each time they enter a new kingdom, because each one will have its own unique terrain that must be strategically prepared for. Ignis is a fire-themed kingdom in which players will find lava flows, lava beds, and fire sprouts–all of which may not be the safest place for your grass and ice Pokémon.

Teachers policing all of you out there will be happy to know that when school resumes this Fall, the schoolyard (classroom?) might be filled with kids battling each other via the newly announced local wireless battle mode.
