Will The Avengers be able to beat The Hunger Games’ opening record?

The Hunger Games was a surprise box office hit this year. It was adapted from a fairly recent book series that was able to garner a lot of fans. Thanks to them and word of mouth, the movie has become the #1 movie in the U.S. three weeks in a row since its opening. It has now grossed over $300 million domestically. Not bad for a movie that cost $78 million to make.

My big question is, will The Avengers be able to beat The Hunger Games‘ $152 million box office opening weekend?

The highest-grossing box office opening weekend for a Marvel Studios movie was Iron Man 2, which raked in $120 million. The first Iron Man film opened with almost $100 million. With all the Marvel heroes featured (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk), I think it’s highly possible that the biggest superhero team-up movie will not only beat The Hunger Games‘ box office opening, but will also beat The Dark Knight‘s opening of $158 million, making it the biggest superhero opening. I predict that The Avengers will make around $175 million. And then there’s The Dark Knight Rises just looming around the corner.

So what are your predictions?
