One of my good friends introduced me to a local ska band back in the day called The Aquabats. When I heard “Super Rad” from them, I immediately got addicted. Not only are their songs super catchy, they also love to dress up as superheroes. Their main goal in life is to stop evil around the world through music. I can dig that. Wow, it’s been a long time since they started, and 18 years later, the Orange County band would finally get their own TV show called The Aquabats! Super Show. It will premiere on The Hub TV Network March 3, 2012.

The show starts off with the Aquabats at a party playing a song that’s about…playing a song at a party. Yeah, it just went meta. I’m a sucker for cheesy lyrics like, “We come to your party, we play nonstop. We play a loud music, it makes your ears pop. We come to your party to deliver your rock. We keep on playing even if you say stop.”

Everything goes well until the group sees a burger joint exploding in the distance. When the team’s hungry, it’s not a good idea to blow up a restaurant nearby. The gang goes to the scene of the crime only to find Manant’s calling card. Manant happens to be a half-ant, half-human villain who was created by Crash, the one who can grow bigger, as he wishes for a villain action hero to come to life. Since Manant was abandoned all those long years by Crash, he decides that ruling the world with giant ants would satisfy his villainous ways.

The episode contains two different cartoon shorts, one featuring the Aquabats mascot, and the other featuring anime-like versions of the group. Lead singer The MC Bat Commander looks very fit in the anime-like version.

I enjoyed the show for what it is and it’s definitely something kids will enjoy too. I love the cheesy jokes and the dialogue references to other geeky movies like Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes.

Grade: B

And here’s the song that first introduced me to The Aquabats, “Super Rad”.

Did you know the lead singer, The MC Bat Commander, is the co-creator of Yo Gabba Gabba! Yeah, I decided to check out the kids show and OH MY GOD! What the hell did I just watch?
