Optimus Prime is a Decepticon?! Transformers Prime Season 2 Episode 1 ReviewPosted 10:31 pm on Thursday, February 16th, 2012 by Mike Villarreal
In case you missed last season’s finale, the Decepticons and the Autobots were in a heated battle inside the Earth’s core with Unicron. Optimus Prime fired the power of the Matrix of Leadership into Unicron’s spark and defeated the Chaos Bringer. Unfortunately for the leader of the Autobots, the desperate move would cause him to loose all the wisdom of the Primes, plus his memory as well. Unaware of the current rivalry between the Autobots and Decepticons, Optimus leaves with his one time arch rival. Now the Autobots must find a way to get their leader back and remind him who he was before it’s too late!
This is a very cool story arc. I won’t lie to you, I have not followed the Transformers Prime series until the viewing of this episode. So, this is an episode review and a first impression of the series itself. For starters, I like that they are digging into the history of Optimus and Megatron before they were enemies. In this episode, Megatron refers to Optimus by calling him is his original name on Cybertron, Orion Pax. Which is also coincidentally the name of this episode, which is part 1 of 3.
As an avid viewer of Saturday morning cartoons, I have to say cartoon CG animation has come along way from the days of ReBoot and Roughnecks: The Starship Trooper Chronicles. The series is Executive Produced by Transformers and Star Trek screenwriters, Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci. Transformers Prime also contains an all-star cast of voice talent that includes Steve Blum, Ernie Hudson and of course, Peter Cullen.
Although I did enjoy how the show got into the backstory of the Transformers, I have to say I cannot stand the cheesy jokes and one-liners. Just like in the movies, the humans get in the way of what is really important, the robots. Obviously this is aimed more towards kids and apparently, the child inside me is dead. Don’t take away from my review that I don’t like the show. I enjoyed this episode enough to want to find out how the rest of the story unfolds, but I’m pretty sure Optimus rejoins the Autobots and all is returned back to normal. Spoiler Alert!
